WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson wrestling team went 1-2 in a home quad meet on Saturday, Dec. 2, earning its win over Penn State Behrend, 37-12, but dropping its matches against Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thomas More, 28-19, and nonconference rival West Liberty, 34-18.
The Presidents' overall record now stands at an even 4-4 on the season with an 0-1 mark in the PAC.
Mike Heinl (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and
Hunter Neely (Cokeburg, Pa./Bentworth) both went 3-0 to lead the W&J grapplers. Heinl (141) started his day with a pin of Thomas More's Parker Buschelman (1:24) before winning by forfeit in the match with Penn State Behrend and closing his efforts with a 13-0 major decision win over Miles Mazik of West Liberty.
All three of Neely's wins came via major decision as the sophomore posted scores of 17-6 over Gunnar Dawson of Thomas More in the 165 weight class, 23-9 over Penn State Behrend's Sam Svetz in the 157 weight class and 15-5 over Josh Cornell of West Liberty, also in the 157-pound weight class.
Sam Florentino (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) (149) tallied two wins for the Presidents, one by a 7-1 decision over Jacob Ognibene of Penn State Behrend and one by a 10-1 major decision over West Liberty's Logan Arneson.
Alex Miller (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) (174) also recorded wins against his Penn State Behrend and West Liberty counterparts, pinning both Zachary Ishman in 1:20 and Chase Morgan in 2:38.
Michael Nagy (McMurray, Pa./Central Catholic) wrestled in the 149 slot against Thomas More and needed just 26 seconds to pin Andrew Tevis.
Josh Armstrong (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) rounded out the top President performers as the junior earned a pin of Penn State Behrend's Daniel Bishel (1:40) in an exhibition match.
The W&J grapplers will be back on the mats on Saturday, Jan. 6, for the Waynesburg Invitational with the opening matches beginning at 9:30 a.m.
