Nick Carr becomes W&J's first national wrestling champion

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior Nick Carr became the first wrestler in school history to win a NCAA Division III national championship Saturday night at the Giant Center after defeating Reece Lefever of Wabash by a 6-2 margin in the 157-pound bracket.

Carr, who finished the season with a perfect 27-0 record, is the fourth W&J student-athlete to claim a national championship.

"Attitude is everything," said Carr after the tournament.  "If you have a good attitude, you're going to win and I'm happy I won."

The top-seeded Carr grabbed a 4-1 lead after one period behind a pair of takedowns and then added an escape before receiving a final point for riding time advantage.  Carr was the consensus No. 1 ranked wrestler all season long and his national championship capped the undefeated year.  Lefever's record dropped to 22-2.

"Being the top-ranked guy puts a little bit of stress on you, but you have to go out, ignore the rankings and wrestle your match," he added.  "It's a cool feeling (being W&J's 1st national wrestling champion).  It hasn't hit me yet, but it will I'm sure in a couple of days."

Carr is the first wrestler from the Presidents' Athletic Conference since 1983 to win a national championship.  He was the 2014 national runner-up at 165 pounds and is now 39-1 for his career as a President.

Prior to Carr's championship night, only three other W&J student-athletes had captured a NCAA Division III Championship (Pat Pyrch - 1993 Diving; Jaimee Heffner - 1997 Javelin; Kaitlyn Orstein - 8 NCAA Swimming Titles - 2004-08).
